Caddie's Summary:. The Kampen Course is undoubtedly one of the five most challenging courses in Indiana - and a beautiful course as well. At 7272yd from the tips (Black tees), fairways are tight and approach shots difficult into complex greens. How this course wasn't placed in Golf Digest's Top Ten is incomprehensible. The site showcases the Pete Dye design and is complete with cat-tailed ponds, fescue grass rough, tight water hazards and large, undulating greens. Although the course has many new trees planted strategically, the overall feel is of a mature course. As a public course, this has to be one of the best around, and for overall challenge and playability, the course should be trialed by all golfers in the area or passing through. Layout and course condition appear as a private club, with public courses rarely displaying the benefits of beauty, challenge and condition. The Complex also has an 18 hole course (nice, but not as formidable as the Kampen Course) named Ackerman Hills adjacent to Kampen.

Long hitters must align to left edge of fairway - bunkers cutting off right 2/3 of fairway begin at 134yd from Center Green (CG). Approach to a 33yd deep green angling left. Ridge off left bunker at 20% depth releases right or long over the top. Slight mound at 40% depth on the right releases left. Slight mound on left at 75% depth slopes to the front.

Ridge across green from 70% depth on left edge to 75% depth on the right edge slopes to the front and to the right and also releases gently long over the top.

Fairway slightly narrows on the right at 214yd from CG. Bunkers on the left do not end till 188yd from CG. On the second shot, green is not approachable except in the air. Fairway slants and sharply narrows left beginning at 140yd from CG (anything past that must be played to the left half - over right edge is steep 30yd ridge to heavy rough). Approach to a 30yd deep green. Front 25% is crowned and moderately slopes to the fringes. Ridge on the right edge at 65% slopes to the front or releases long over the top. All of the left edge 3yd in from the fringe is false green.

Carrying any part of the right bunker from Gold or White tees is not practical. Drives should be patient and play to center or left half of the fairway (the small bunker just off left fairway edge is 287yd from CG) Approach to a 48yd deep green angling right. Depression on right edge at 10% pulls to fringe. Mound at 10% depth on the left edge releases right or long over the top. Mid portions of the green slopes left and to the front. Mound on right edge at 75% releases hard left and long over the top.

From White tees, golfer is looking at 280yd to CG. Fairway goes either left or right around the 50-60yd wide bunker and rough area. No way to reach the green with the bunker's protection. Best play is to 25yd or more from CG. 28yd deep green horse-shoes around the bunker area (very wide green). Midline (middle of bunker line as well) is a ridge releasing hard left or right. Left half is slightly crowned in the center and slopes to the fringes. Similar on the right - The crown on the right side is 12yd off the right fringe (closer to edge than on the left).
